The conferences NEW CRAFTS FOR NEW ECOLOGIES were conceived as an opportunity to get to know, share and reflect on new approaches, both established and emerging, that have arisen in the field of crafts in Spain and abroad. We talked about innovation, but also about tradition. The speakers shared their projects and ways of working, proposals that are capable of gathering local knowledge and hybridising it with new techniques and technologies. These new design possibilities arise from the need to explore other material responses that are more sensitive to the ecological complexity that surrounds us. We have been talking about how to combine craft, innovation and ecological thinking with the use of materials from the environment.

What is the future of craft? Can we propose other crafts from a middle ground between innovation, tradition and contemporary design?

In the rural environment, materiality, nature and traditional knowledge come together and open up different ways of relating to the social, cultural and productive environment. This conference has focused on the material potential of the rural environment as a generator of new avenues for future cultural, social, environmental and economic development. It is here that new possibilities for designs and futures open up, making possible different ecologies that are more sensitive to people and the environment that surrounds us.
